personal object : an amethyst and silver bracelet

Following the death of Les, my much-loved father-in-law, my mum-in-law bought all the girls in the family a piece of jewellery containing amethyst, as that was his birthstone. After a couple of years I lost it! We searched for a replacement and eventually, after three years, settled for a bracelet, which, although the same materials, was a totally different design. After a couple of weeks, I put my hand into the pocket of a coat I hadn’t worn for three years - and found my original bracelet. The replacement then vanished and was never to be seen again. I wear my bracelet all the time and think about Les every day. He comes with me to all our family events.

chosen artwork : Aspects of Myself    Grayson Perry, 2001

I love the way Grayson Perry has turned a lump of clay into a story. Using images rather than words, he shows an aspect of his life. The shape of the bottle is traditional and contrasts with the modern story depicted on it.
