personal object : a ring

This silver and gold-plated ring, with its amber coloured stone, was given to me by my late friend, ‘Jaqui Mc’. She was a dear friend who meant a lot to me. She used to volunteer at the place where I worked in Anfield. She had the biggest heart and gave her time and love freely. We used to deliver community projects together, including ‘Stay and Play’, card making, family cookery evenings and more. Jaqui stayed there long after I left. She shared all that she had to give. I miss her smile and her laugh and her big heart. This ring reminds me of her – I can touch it and think of her.

chosen artwork : Bottle and Fishes    Georges Braque, c.1910-12

The flat, muted colours in this painting – dark greens, greys and black – make me feel sad. I get the feeling that it’s done, finished - the end. Regardless of the bottle or fish, it’s about the feeling I get from the colours and the flat, deconstructed shapes and lines. Just like my friend is gone, there’s a void left – a flatness – but there’s always a piece of her lurking in the back of my mind, lighting up the shadows.
