Mandy

from : Khartoum, Sudan

personal object : a silver ring

This ring was a present from my aunt. Five years ago, while I was studying in Sudan, I lived with my grandparents and aunt, and they became like my immediate family. In July this year I visited Sudan again, and meeting my family was very emotional. When my visit came to an end, my aunt gifted me this ring. It is a reminder of the great time I had in Sudan, visiting family.

chosen artwork : Chicago, Board of Trade II    Andreas Gursky, 1999

This artwork caught my eye straight away - it may be due to the size of the piece, but I think it’s probably due to the vibrant colours and the sense of chaos that the artist has captured. I can personally relate to this piece as I started to work 9-to-5 this year after graduating form university. During stressful times at work, when I have deadlines to meet, the chaos represented in the photograph reflects the chaos in my mind.
