personal object : a photograph and a wood-block with text

This family photograph was taken 27 years ago, during the First Holy Communion of my elder sister, Emilia. At that time, we were all together. Our father passed away 17 years ago, and my sisters have all chosen their own ways of life. I now see this photograph as a way to remember where I have come from - where I learned and experienced love, truth, respect and tolerance. Even though we live in different parts of the world, we still keep in touch and miss each other.

The personalised wood block with the text ‘You are stronger than you think, more powerful than you think, braver than you think and smarter than you think.’ was given to me by my sisters and my mum when I decided to move abroad. That was three years ago. They told me, “Don’t forget who you are!

chosen artwork : Untitled (Study for Parallel of Life and Art)   Nigel Henderson, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, 1952

I like this form of collage, where art is made from ‘the everyday’. It contains traditional pattens and abstract objects, but also the face of an old person. The two rows of images automatically invite us to compare the two. These ‘old style’ photographs take us back into the past - into dreams.
