Janet

from : East Riding, Yorkshire, UK

personal object : The Life of a Clergyman’s Daughter    George Orwell, 1937

I bought this book last week outside York Minster. It appealed to me because the blurb said it was about the life of a clergyman’s daughter in the 1930’s and I was interested to learn about that. I always take a book with me wherever I go, so that I do not waste time if I have a few minutes to spare when travelling. It has to be a paperback, not an i-book on my phone. There is ‘art’ on the cover of each book and a painting in the story.

chosen artwork : The Beached Margin    Edward Wadsworth, 1937

This painting was made in 1937, the same year that my chosen book was written. I like this connection. I was drawn to the comparison between the character of the person in the book’s title – the clergyman’s daughter – and the religious subject matter of the book, contrasted with the rebellion of this surreal painting.
