John

from : Indiana, USA

personal object : two service medals

I have two service medals. One is from Vietnam, and the other signifies that I was injured in combat. There were two seminal events in my life. One was attaining, or experiencing, enlightenment. The other was coming as close to death as it’s possible to come. The second happened before the first when I was told I had been shot five times and I realised I was going to die (actually I had only been shot twice) and I had to think if I believed in God. I thought very deeply and quickly... and said “No.

chosen artwork : Bursting Shell    Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, 1915

I chose this artwork because, when we think of death, we think of going into a white light. The spirals also remind me of a Fibonnaci spiral.
