Emma

from : Derry, Northern Ireland

personal object : my glasses

I have been wearing glasses since I was 18 months old. I couldn’t be without them. My friends in school say I don’t look like myself without my glasses. They let me express my style and personality. I love my glasses; I wouldn’t feel like me without them. I agree with my friends; I don’t think I look like myself without them.

chosen artwork : Young Serbs    Phil Collins, 2001

The artwork was selected by Emma and her mother, Keira. They wrote:

Patrick is a photographer; we love portraits. At the end of each year we do a photo-book of our favourite photos of that year. Emma’s glasses feature in every book; a timeline of her changing style, personality and maturity. We loved the layout of the photographs in this artwork - how they opened up like a book, with the centre person looking forward and the end people like the covers. The style of the photos reminded us of photos taken of Emma when she was very young, through blades of tall grasses in Roe Valley Country Park in Ireland on a beautiful day like that captured in these photographs. Ironically, although the people aren’t wearing glasses, the feel and layout of the photos reminded us of our much-loved photo style and yearly books. The artwork shows Serbians after the war. Emma was born in Northern Ireland in the era after The Troubles and the Good Friday Agreement - hopefully her glasses will never witness a return to those times.
