personal object : a medical alert bracelet

I have to wear my MedicAlert bracelet wherever I go. I was born with a liver condition so, if I was in an accident, the hospital can use the code engraved on it to bring up my medical records. I have had various types of MedicAlert jewellery since primary school but the one I’m wearing today has been with me the longest. It means a lot to me because it has been with me when I have travelled to various places including Iceland, which was my first ever flight! I was always told that I wouldn’t be able to fly abroad due to my medical condition but last year I got the approval because my health had improved. This bracelet means so much to me because it gives me peace of mind and it could potentially save my life one day.

chosen artwork : Untitled     Glenn Ligon, 2006

This piece is one of my favourites at Tate Liverpool. It always stands out to me because of its boldness. I like neon art. I have always wanted to go to America ever since I was a child, but it felt like a distant dream with my doctors saying I couldn’t fly on a plane due to my health. Now, many years later, my health has continued to improve and now I am able to travel abroad by plane. My once distant dream is now becoming a realistic goal and hopefully I will travel to America one day.
