Amy

from : West Midlands, Staffordshire, UK

personal object : a baseball cap

My dad bought me this cap when we went to the 2017 Iron Maiden concert in Liverpool, on their Book of Souls tour. He bought me the tickets for my 21st birthday. I wear my cap quite a lot, especially in the art studio to keep my hair out of my eyes. It still has concrete and plaster on it, as they were the materials I have been using as part of my last project. I mislaid it for a month at one point and felt very lost without it. It reminds me of my love of Rock music, my bond with my dad, and of being proud of my identity after receiving comments on looking ‘boyish’. I collected hats as a child, which made me feel more comfortable – this hat is one of those that make me feel great. Not long after the concert, I met Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden singer) and got him to sign a copy of my book for my dad. He is pretty boss!!!

chosen artwork : Abstract Painting No.5    Ad Reinhardt, 1962

I chose Reinhardt’s ‘Abstract Painting’ because it really stands out to me. I like the Gothic genre and Rock genres, and the colour black is heavily involved in these. I use the colour black a lot in my own art practice, as well, to get these interests and themes across. Plus, the painting uses mainly blues and blacks in its colour palette, both of which heavily make up my identity.
