Basma

from : Libya

personal object : a gold and diamond ring

I have had this ring since I was a teenager. I saved for three years to buy it for myself because I wanted to be independent. I escaped domestic violence and, after separation, I became estranged from my family. My ring is the only thing I took with me from my home country. I am no longer a victim; I am now studying to be a lawyer. This ring represents my independence.

chosen artwork : Head of a Girl and Children    Andy Warhol, 1958-61

The children are hidden; there are things behind them. The boy looks nervous; he doesn’t want to look behind him. The children look like they are crying. Some have no faces. The image is painted in limited colours – it looks faded, like memories, all behind you. This painting seems to be about the past and the present - it is about learning; the children are a metaphor.
