Joe

from : Hale, Cheshire, UK

personal object : a keyring with a leather turtle from Japan / a 5-Yen coin / a stone with a hole in it

The turtle was a gift from our family au pair who was from Japan. We stayed in contact over many years. Later in life I travelled to Japan and the turtle travelled with me. I also obtained the coin from the son of the au pair. The word for “5 Yen” in Japanese sounds like the Japanese word for “family”. The stone I picked up from Brighton beach. I combined all these treasured objects onto a keyring so I could carry them with me.

chosen artwork : Modulation of Space 1    Eduardo Chillida,1963

The shapes and surface colour and finish of this artwork are similar to my keyring objects - the turtle and the stone. There is a sense of movement and a collection of forms in the sculpture, which is similar to the collection of objects on my keyring. It also has a ‘worn’ feel, with polished edges. It has a body-like arrangement of limbs.
