Maureen

from :  East Yorkshire, UK

personal object : a white gold and diamond ring

My husband bought me this ring. He had cancer and knew he was going to die. This ring was the last thing he bought me, so it is very special. He took me to an old family firm of jewellers in Oxford and I chose it with him.

The maypole, folk dancing and Morris dancing elements of this piece mean a lot to me as I attended a small village school in the Yorkshire Wolds where the Head was a caller at folk dances. He taught us maypole dancing and folk dances. I now live in Headington Quarry, Oxford, where there is also a strong tradition of Morris and folk dancing. The Quarry Morris Men are one of the oldest groups in Britain and are connected to Cecil Sharp, who visited the area and met their leader in the 1950’s. My children attended Quarry First School and were also taught maypole dancing and celebrated the Crowning of the May Queen every year.
