Paula

from : Angola / Portugal

personal object : two ivory elephants  (remembered objects, no image)

My parents are both dead now and I chose to destroy almost all the ivory objects they kept from their time in Africa. I decided to keep two small ivory elephants for my two boys. I like the elephants, not because they are made of ivory, but because they come from Africa where I was born. Now they live in London, having been at my parents’ home in Portugal until they died. They now belong to my boys, who have mixed feelings about them because they are made of ivory.

chosen artwork : Well Done!    Bill Woodrow, 1987

I liked this artwork because I come from Angola, an ex-Portuguese colony, and am well aware of the complex issues that besiege the continent.
