Alice

from : Sydney, Australia

personal object : a ring

I actually haven’t had my ring very long, but in the past three months I have worn it every day. It’s shaped like a eucalyptus leaf, wrapped around to make a ring. I’ve lived in the UK for 16 years but Australia still feels like home so, when I was in Sydney in April, I bought the ring as a link there. It feels like home.

chosen artwork : Jimmy Paulette and Tabboo! undressing, NYC   Nan Goldin, 1991

My ring doesn’t instantly read as an object with a Queer history, but it is, because it’s mine. I love Goldin’s work because it captures the intimate moments of making and unmaking the self. We shape ourselves with material things, and perform our identities through belongings. They carry our shapes and history – their narratives are ours, and we can read them as biographies.
